Take a trip Off the Beaten Path

We have chosen outings that are provide a glimpse into the history, and culture of our area in the natural, scenic splendor that this season  is famous for.

 

Oct 1st- October 13, Hudson 19th Annual ArtsWalk Festival,

Two events stand out:  Creating Landscapes in the Landscape, an en plein air paintout, exhibition and auction at Olana State Historic Site, and The ArtsWalk Literary Festival that takes place over three days at two locations in Hudson.  Lee Gould, mastermind of the Literary Festival both last year and this, has assembled an impressive lineup of poets, prose writers, and multimedia novelists who will read from their work at the Hudson Opera House, and Karen Schoemer will be presenting emerging and established writers at the Spotty Dog.   There will be plenty of music, of course, including GrammyAward-winner singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester on Sunday night as part of the Helsinki on Broadway series. Other ArtsWalk-related events are scattered throughout the listings below and in more detail at  www.columbiacountytourism.org .  ArtsWalk continues next weekend.

  •  Oct 4 and 5, 2013  Art Book Sale – Hundreds of gently-used books on art, graphic design, crafts, photography, architecture and interior design, as well as a large selection of titles on art history, artist’s monographs, biographies, and various art techniques (watercolor, pastels, etc.) – Hardcover, paperback and coffee table books available – To benefit the Friends of the Hudson Area Library – Information at www.hudsonarealibrary.org – 10 am to 2 pm – Book Sale Room, Hudson Area Library, 400 State Street
  • October 4, 2013  The Great Stone Barn Project: Past, Present, Future – Explore the new exhibit with the exhibit creator, Peter Watson, learn about the Shakers’ innovative farming methods and construction techniques, and the Shaker Museum/Mount Lebanon organization’s plans for stabilizing the structure – Information at 794-9100 – 2 to 3 pm – Shaker Museum/Mount Lebanon, 202 Shaker Road, New Lebanon
  • October 5and 6, 2013 Old Time Days – Hudson Valley Old Time Power Association 38th Annual Show – Information at 822-1511 – 390 Fingar Road (off Yates Road), Greenport
  • Windows on Warren – Columbia County Council on the Arts members’ artwork will be on display (and for sale) in the storefront windows of galleries, shops and restaurants on Warren Street – Pick up an ArtsWalk brochure for full listing of artists and locations.
  • October 5 and 6, 2013 Claverack Free Library Annual Fall Book Sale – Thousands of gently-used books at bargain prices – Early Bird Special on Saturday with slightly higher prices – Baked goods and lunch fare also available – Raffle for a handmade quilt – Buy a library tote bag and fill it with books for $15 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday – All proceeds benefit the Library – Information at 851-7120 – Saturday 9 am to 3 pm, Sunday 10 am to 2 pm – Claverack Free Library, Intersection of 23B and 9-H, Claverack

Autumn in Austerlitz  Sunday October 13th, 2013

This fun event for all ages began in 1997 as a home grown festival to raise money for the Austerlitz Historical Society and the society’s ambitious project: to create a living history museum in the town of Austerlitz which would depict life in the 1830s, and a center for historical investigation for Austerlitz Town History.
